“Earth to Annie!”

Annie blinked and looked up from filleting the bass Arthur Horncastle had brought her straight from the Humber early this morning, to see Lynette, arms folded, a little smile on her face, both eyebrows raised.

“Oh, sorry. I didn’t see you.”

“Or hear me, either. I’ve said your name oh, I don’t know, three or four times.” Lynette stepped into the kitchen. “What far distant planet did you go to? And speaking of being away, I was looking for you before. Where were you?”

“Taking your advice.”

“Oh? What advice is that?”

Annie rolled her eyes. “The other day you encouraged me to go out and have fun with the man with all the names. That’s what I was doing.”

Lynette clapped her hands. “Brilliant.”

“And I’m going to have him. Tonight.”

Eyebrows snapping together, Lynette said, “Sorry? Have him… As in shag the man?”

Annie huffed a laugh. “He’s this amazing male who’s not just good to look at, but good to kiss. And other things beyond kissing. Why shouldn’t I have some of what I can tell you he’s more than willing to offer?”

Lynette whistled. “I’m proud of you. And I’m proud of me for offering you such excellent advice.” She crowded closer. “Now, do tell. How long do you plan on having what he’s willing to offer? By that I mean will it be something—shall we say—long-lasting?”

Annie leaned back against the table and folded her arms across her chest. “Excuse me, but weren’t you the one who said I shouldn’t think beyond a date or two?”

“Well, yes I did. But is there such a thing as too much shagging?”

Annie couldn’t imagine there’d ever be too much shagging when it came to Charlie. “I’ll be spending the night with him. At his hotel in Lincoln.”

Lynette crowed a laugh. “Brilliant!”

Annie bent to the fish she was filleting so Lynette couldn’t tell by the look on her face how merely talking about the man affected her.

“Wait.” Lynette knocked a fist against the prep table. Annie looked up.

With a canny smile on her face, Lynette said, “I get the feeling whatever you say is between you and your Charlie, you really would like it to be a bit more than spending a night or two in a hotel room with him.”

“Why not?” Annie kept her voice steady. “He’s hot. He’s rich. He has a great sense of humor. It would be nice.”

“Just nice? Is there some hallucinatory substance in the food you’ve been eating here? A man who’s hot, rich, and has a great sense of humor is hard to find. I know because I’ve been looking for years and haven’t found one. Good Lord, Annie. That doesn’t sound nice. It sounds like perfection.”

Annie hoisted the board she was filleting the fish on and set it in front of Davey, whose earbuds were blasting music loud enough she could hear it. She yelled, “Can you finish this for me?”

With unusual patience, Davey had been showing James how to make an agrodolce sauce for the bass. He nodded and took the board from Annie.
